Partly this was because the premise sounded disturbingly like Misery my least favourite King novel and partly it was because I was suffering extreme genophobia fear of sex at the time and the very premise Geralds Game is built on. Most everything about this book is great.
Mike Flanagan reportedly carried around a copy of Geralds Game to meetings because it was the Stephen King book he dreamed of adapting since he was a teenager. So Geralds Game I think I have to resort to the famous Its not you its me line and throw this book back on my King shelf and probably never pick it up again. Im very impressed that King was able to write the majority of this almost 500 page book surrounding a situation that only lasted a few hours. King takes it over the top way over the top in an exquisitely horrifying frightfest about a woman forced to face her deepest fearsand then some. The handcuffs the isolation the vulnerability.

Geralds Game So theres poor Jessie with no one around for miles and King zooms in on every moment of her ordeal with. Not that I missed it GG is still a terrific story. Geralds game was a book I consciously avoided as a teenager even going as far as returning it back to the library unread.
Just because I have been talking some smack and only giving it 3 stars that doesnt mean I think its a horrible book. This is arguably a sign of insanity. The novel much like many of his others quickly became a New York Times 1 Best Seller.
It wasnt bad but it wasnt great. While this is one of the best-written stories King has ever published it will offend many through sheer bad taste. This isnt a particularly long book but to keep the audience engaged for over 300 pages of one setting is impressive.
But sometimes things can get out of hand and this time Jessie wasnt playing along.
